A Medicare Advantage plan is a private insurance plan that covers your Original Medicare benefits (Part A and Part B), and often includes extra benefits like prescription drug coverage, dental, and vision - all in one plan.
Medigap is private insurance that works alongside Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) to help cover out-of-pocket costs like deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance. This plan has a monthly premium in addition to your Part B premium and gives you more predictable healthcare expenses.
If you have Medicare and other health coverage (like employer/retiree coverage or Medigap), Medicare generally pays first and the other insurance pays second - this process is called coordination of benefits.
No - Medigap only works with Original Medicare (Parts A & B), and you generally cannot have a Medigap plan if you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan.
No - Medigap policies sold today do not include drug coverage, so if you want prescription drug benefits you must join a separate Medicare Part D plan or choose a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan that includes drug coverage.
You typically can buy a Medigap policy during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period, which usually starts 7 months before you turn 65 and/or enrolled in Part B and lasts for 6 months after your Part B effective date; outside this window, you may have limited options or underwriting requirements.
